The Mob Museum in downtown Las Vegas opened on February 14, 2012, in the restored former Las Vegas Post Office and Courthouse, a 1933 federal building later listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Created after the city acquired the courthouse in 2000 for $1 to preserve it for cultural use, the museum explores the long struggle between organized crime and law enforcement in Las Vegas and across the United States. Its historic courtroom, used for televised Kefauver Committee hearings in 1950 and 1951, anchors exhibits on Prohibition, gambling, narcotics, surveillance, and the figures and institutions on both sides of that conflict.
