Bells Rock Light stands in Virginia's York River, where it was established to guide navigation to West Point, once the river's head of navigation in the nineteenth century. A first light house built at Lazaretto Point in 1880 was reassigned to Thimble Shoal Light after a fire there, so a second house was constructed and installed at Bells Rock in 1881. In 1884 a schooner struck the structure and broke three support columns, but repairs were made quickly. As commercial traffic on the York River declined, the station lost importance, and in 1928 the original house was replaced by a skeleton tower on the existing iron foundation.
