In Salisbury, North Carolina, the Rowan Museum occupies a former courthouse built between 1855 and 1857 that survived Stoneman’s Raid and is regarded as one of the state’s finest antebellum buildings. After a new courthouse opened beside it in 1914, the old structure became a community building and in 2001 became the museum’s home. Its exhibits focus on Rowan County history, including a second-floor room preserving courthouse remnants. The museum also cares for notable historic properties, especially the Old Stone House, built in 1766 by Michael Braun near present-day Granite Quarry, the county’s oldest house, saved from demolition in the 1950s and donated in 1966.
