Nichols Pond Park in Madison County consists of 45 acres and is open to the public year round from dawn to dusk for hiking, bird watching, and other outdoor recreation. Its approximately 15-acre pond is a forested wetland that provides habitat for birds, mammals, and several plant species, and it serves as the headwaters for Clockville Creek, which supplies water to the waterfalls at Oxbow Falls in the Town of Lincoln. The site was also the location of an early Oneida Indian village, where artifacts dating back to the 1400's have been discovered, and there is substantial evidence that Nichols Pond was the site of a decisive battle in which Samuel de Champlain, aided by 10 Frenchmen and 300 Hurons, attacked the stockaded Oneida Indian village October 10-16, 1615.
