Paul J. Rainey Wildlife Sanctuary is a twenty-six thousand-acre private refuge in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, owned and managed by the National Audubon Society since its establishment in 1924. Created to provide safe habitat for waterfowl and other native wildlife, it supports alligators, deer, muskrats, otters, geese, and many other species. Its remoteness is central to its role: there are no roads leading in, and boat access through its private canals requires permission. Closed to the public and off-limits to hunting and fishing, it has long served as a protected haven for Louisiana wetland wildlife.
