As early as 1846, this site in Limestone County was used to bury travelers who died while passing through the area, and those graves remain unmarked. In 1854, Ezekiel J. Billington came to this part of Texas from Kentucky with his wife, Kitty Ann, and their three children. The following year he organized a Baptist church named Mt. Antioch, whose six charter members were Ezekiel and Kitty Ann Billington, Nancy Billington, Houghton Hughes, Median Hughes, and M.J. Billington. The nearby spring was a favorite camping place for travelers. The first marked grave in what became Mt. Antioch Cemetery was that of George Kimmel, who died in 1860, the infant son of early settler James Kimmel. Between 1860 and 1875, the community that developed around the church and cemetery grew and prospered, but about 1874 members of the church began moving to the town of Mt. Calm, where they organized a new congregation. The cemetery has continued in use and has been maintained by local residents and descendants of the early settlers as a reminder of the early heritage of this part of Limestone County.
