Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge is a 4,040-acre Missouri River refuge in eastern Nebraska, north of Omaha, created in 1992 to restore a former river-edge landscape that had been cultivated, neglected, and altered by channelization. Named for a side branch of the Missouri known since the early 19th century, the area reflects the river’s shifting course, including the chute’s separation from flowing water in 1937. Restoration began in 1993, reconnecting the chute and reestablishing native habitat with thousands of plantings. The refuge now supports diverse mammals, migratory birds, fishing access, and trails, while remaining vulnerable to major floods such as those in 2011.
