Morrow Mountain
Nature
Morrow Mountain, rising 2,142 feet in central New York, is the highest point in Madison County and the dominant landform of the 1,290-acre Morrow Mountain State Forest in Georgetown and Nelson. Its summit now holds a 100-foot communication tower, but the mountain is also tied to the region’s fire observation past. In 1940, Civilian Conservation Corps camp S-103 from DeRuyter built a 67-foot-6-inch steel fire lookout tower there. That lookout remained in service until the end of 1970, when aerial fire detection replaced such operations, and the dismantled tower was later purchased for planned rebuilding at a camp in Oppenheim.
