Originally erected about 1912 as a one-room lockup with no cells, this jail was fitted with two flat iron cells in 1913. It was last used as a lockup in the 1940's. Heated with natural gas before the advent of safety devices, it was the site of a prisoner's death by asphyxiation when the gas heat malfunctioned. The jail was later removed from its original site and completely restored in 2000.
