Chaco Culture was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Between 850 and 1250 CE, Chaco Canyon was a major cultural center and a center of trade, politics, and ceremony, remarkable for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings and urban architecture in what is now the southwestern United States. During the same period, other peoples across the globe created sites of extraordinary architecture and culture, including L'Anse aux Meadows in Canada, Durham Cathedral in England, the Catalan Romanesque Churches of the Vall de Boi in Spain, Geghard Monastery in Armenia, the Mogao Caves in China, Angkor in Cambodia, the Great Mosque and Hospital of Divrigi in Turkey, M'Zab Valley in Algeria, Rapa Nui National Park in Chile, and El Tajin in Mexico.
