Scott County, Tennessee, was established in 1849 and named in honor of General Winfield Scott, a veteran of the War of 1812 who successfully commanded the southern thrust into Mexico City during the Mexican War, served as Chief of Staff of the Army until 1862, and remained military adviser to the President until his death. Kentucky, an Iroquois word meaning Meadow Land, was visited before 1750 by Indian tribes from as far west as the Rocky Mountains; its first white settlement was at Harrodsburg in 1774, and it was the second district west of the Alleghenies to be settled and the first to become a state in 1792.
