When the Cherokee Trail group reached the junction of their new wagon road from Oklahoma and the Santa Fe Trail, the company established a post office, wrapped news of their arrival and accomplishment in pasteboard and oilcloth, and placed it under the only large rock they could find. They also obtained a large stone and set it in the fork of the road, where one of their workmen cut into it, "To Fayetteville, Ark., 300 miles— Capt. Evans' Cal. Com'y, May 12, 1849," to inform prairie travelers of the new road. Jack and Pat Fletcher later helped dig up a rock found just south of here at the end of the hedge row, raising the question of whether it could be that rock.
