Throughout the day of July 11, 1863, Morgan's Raiders streamed northward from Lexington, passing through Hinesville, now Blocher, Deputy, and Paris. As a diversionary tactic, a regiment of cavalry rode eastward on the Kent Road, creating a sense of panic in Madison. The main column reached Paris, where much-needed water was found at the well in front of the general store, which was looted. From Paris, Morgan's men proceeded toward North Vernon and the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad line. On July 12, the pursuing Union cavalry watered their horses at this pump.
