During World War II, the SS Blackpoint and her crew served among the U.S.N. Armed Guard and merchant seamen who carried supplies on ships. On May 5, 1945, the SS Blackpoint became the last ship sunk in the Atlantic Theatre of War by enemy action when the German submarine U-853 torpedoed her 3.2 miles from Point Judith Lighthouse, Rhode Island, at Lat 41.19.30 North and Long. 71.24.49 West. Named among the U.S.N. Armed Guard and seamen are Ronnie Whitson, Lloyd Merchant, William Antilley, Geo. P. Baeser, Leo H. Beck, Milton Matthews, Lauper B. Clark, Cleo Clark, Robert L. Korb, Ansey L. Morgan, Marvin A. Mertinek, Richard C. Shepson, and Reino Lindstrom. On May 6, 1945, the crews of the USS Atherton and USS Morberly sank the German submarine U-853, and there were no survivors.
