Part of this building served as the Calaveras County Courthouse from 1852 to 1866, until the county seat was moved to San Andreas. George W. Leger then acquired the court building and incorporated it into his adjoining hotel, which had operated since the early gold mining days. In 1874 the hotel was known as the Grand Hotel when a fire damaged it and destroyed its dance hall. After restoration in 1879, it became known as the Leger Hotel.
