Willapa Hills Trail is a fifty-six-mile rail trail in southwestern Washington that follows a former Northern Pacific Railway line from Chehalis to near South Bend. Now the backbone of Willapa Hills State Park, it is open year-round for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. The railroad carried passengers and freight until service ended in the twentieth century, after which the state acquired the corridor and gradually opened trail sections beginning in 2001. Known for gentle grades, numerous bridges, and varied scenery through farmland, forest, and river valleys, the trail has also seen major restoration after flood damage and remains an evolving recreation corridor with plans for broader regional connections.
