Roan Mountain State Park in Tennessee’s Blue Ridge protects 2,006 acres of mostly hardwood forest near Roan Mountain, the Appalachian Trail, and the North Carolina border. Known for high-elevation outdoor recreation, it offers hiking, mountain biking, camping, fishing, swimming, and winter cross-country skiing, along with the highest-elevation swimming pool in the Tennessee State Park System. Each late June, the Roan Mountain Rhododendron Festival celebrates the bloom of alpine catawba rhododendrons in what is called the world’s largest natural rhododendron garden. The park also preserves the historic Miller Farmstead, settled in 1870, linking its scenery and visitor facilities to an older mountain community.
