Several snow-covered summits can line up beyond the Tatoosh Range on a clear day as part of a chain of 19 major active volcanoes along the western edge of North America, extending from northern California to southern British Columbia within the Pacific Ring of Fire. This volcanic chain is growing above the collision zone of oceanic and continental plates. The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens showed the power of Cascade volcanoes, though even larger eruptions have happened in the past. Mount Rainier is potentially dangerous because its huge volumes of snow and ice could generate deadly lahars. Peaks identified from this viewpoint include Goat Rocks, Mount Adams, Castle Peak, Pinnacle Peak, Mount Hood, Plummer Peak, and Mount St. Helens.
