Isaac Jogues, born at Orleans, France, in A.D. 1606, was an apostle of the Mohawks at their castle of Ossernenon on this site from A.D. 1642 to 1646. Led captive here in A.D. 1642, he endured long and cruel torture, then was freed by the Dutch at Fort Orange (Albany) and escorted to New Amsterdam (New York) by Domine Megapolensis, a Protestant minister, in A.D. 1643. Sent here from Quebec as an envoy of peace in June 1646 and as a missionary in October 1646, he was tomahawked for the faith on the hill above on October 18, 1646.
