Daisy Cave on San Miguel Island is one of California’s most important archaeological sites for tracing long-term human activity and environmental change. Its sheltered deposits span from the terminal Pleistocene to the present and preserve evidence from when the northern Channel Islands were joined as Santarosae. Excavations beginning in 1967 and later fieldwork refined the cave’s chronology and revealed human remains, cordage, basketry, sea-grass matting, shells, stone tools, plant remains, and animal fossils, including mammoths. Fish bones dated to about 11,500 to 8,500 cal B.P. show that marine foods formed a major part of early island diets, while netting and boat-related materials point to highly skilled seafaring peoples.
