Sugar Creek Covered Bridge, southeast of Chatham, Illinois, is a historic covered road bridge over Sugar Creek and one of only five historic covered bridges surviving in the state. Built by Thomas Black with a Burr truss, it is 110 feet long and 30 feet wide, though sources disagree whether it was constructed in 1827 or 1880. Illinois acquired the bridge in 1963 and undertook a major renovation in 1965. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 9, 1978, it closed to traffic in 1984 and now stands in a local park. Among Illinois’s surviving historic covered bridges, it is considered the oldest.
