Kumiva Peak, the 8,238-foot high point of Nevada’s Selenite Range, rises in the Mount Limbo Wilderness Study Area in the Great Basin Ranges. Its steep flanks tower above Poito Valley to the west and Kumiva Valley to the east, exemplifying the basin-and-range landscape in which narrow mountain chains rise abruptly from broad desert basins. Set in the high, cold Great Basin Desert, the summit is marked by hot summers, cold winters, dry air, and sharp day-night temperature swings. Officially recognized by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names and appearing in publications since at least 1877, it remains a remote, rugged landmark.
