Advanced Redoubt was built between 1845 and 1870 as part of the Fort Barrancas network to protect the Pensacola Navy Yard. While Fort Barrancas primarily guarded the harbor entrance, the redoubt defended the north side of the peninsula against a land attack. It was the only Third System fort that did not defend the coast.
