Moorestown, N.J., was settled by Friends in 1682, founded as Chester Township in 1698, and by 1700 was recognized as the area's business and cultural center. In 1778, British officers lodged here. In 1802, it was named Moorestown in honor of Thomas Moore, a tavern keeper, and in 1812 the present town hall was erected.
