Yale’s Collection of Musical Instruments in New Haven, part of the Yale School of Music, began in 1900 with Morris Steinert’s gift of historic keyboard instruments and grew into one of the university’s major music resources. After moving in 1961 to its present Hillhouse Avenue building, the collection expanded further through the Belle Skinner and Emil Herrmann acquisitions. It is especially strong in keyboard instruments spanning six centuries, while also preserving major stringed, wind, non-European, and bell collections. More than a display museum, it supports teaching, exhibitions, tours, lecture-demonstrations, and concerts that use restored instruments, keeping scholarship and performance closely linked.
