In the 1920s, showman Florenz Ziegfeld lived at Burkeley Crest with his wife, actress Billie Burke, remembered as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz. The estate included a private zoo with buffalo, tame bears, and an elephant named Ziggy, who was sent to the St. Louis Zoo when he became too large for Hastings, and a playhouse for their daughter Patty that was a child-sized replica of George Washington's Mount Vernon, complete with running water, something the original lacked. The mansion, famous for its glittering parties, along with its playhouse, zoo, and spectacular beech tree, are all gone.
