Ganogeh was the principal Cayuga Indian village on the site of Canoga and was identified as Ga-a-no-ge, meaning “Place of Floating Oil.” It was the only town between the lakes shown on the Morgan map of 1720 and was also known as Canoga, called “Sweet Water” in a Seneca County history. At a treaty held with the Cayugas at Cayuga Ferry on July 27, 1795, a cession was obtained of their reservations except one mile square at Cannogai for the use of an Indian sachem called Fish Carrier, and this tract was later acquired by the State.
