Glacial Lakes State Park in Pope County, Minnesota, was established in 1963 to preserve a remnant of the rolling prairie that once covered much of the state and the distinctive terrain left by the Wisconsonian glaciation. In the Leaf Mountains south of Starbuck, it combines native prairie grasses and wildflowers with ice-shaped hills, depressions, lakes, and a mix of prairie and woodland birdlife from its transition-zone setting. The park also supports deer, beavers, wood ducks, and other wildlife. Recreation includes swimming, fishing, boating with electric motors only, winter sports, and stargazing in its remote, dark skies.
