Adrian Joss, known as “Addie,” was born in Woodland, Wisconsin, on April 12, 1880. When he enrolled at Wayland Academy in 1897, he was a fine pitcher and an admirer of Emerson “Pink” Hawley, Class of 1891. Coached by English instructor and baseball fan Edwin P. Brown, Class of 1890, Joss pitched the team to a brilliant season in 1898. He spent his entire major league career in Cleveland in the American League, making his debut on April 26, 1902. Joss died of tubercular meningitis on April 14, 1911. He was so admired by his peers that they played the first “All-Star” game that July to benefit his widow and children. His career included four consecutive seasons with at least 20 wins, 2 no-hitters, and a 1.89 career ERA. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1951 and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978.
