The Chicago Portage served as the connecting link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River System along waterways and trails through which history passed. In 1673, led by American Indians, explorers Marquette and Joliet became the first Europeans to cross the portage. This route encouraged the development of the I and M Canal and the growth of Chicago.
