Pikes Peak Highway is a 19-mile toll road from Cascade, Colorado, to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak, continuing a tradition of mountain travel that began with the Pike's Peak Carriage Road, opened in 1888 and closed in 1902. Built in 1915 with financing from Spencer Penrose, the highway became closely associated with mountain racing through the annual Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, held since 1916, and later the Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb. Long partly gravel, it became the focus of environmental litigation in 1998, leading to full paving completed in 2011. Despite fears that paving would hurt racing, the hill climb continued, and the road remains a scenic and historic Colorado route.
