Dents Run Covered Bridge, near Laurel Point in West Virginia, spans the small stream called Dents Run and preserves a late 19th-century form of rural road building. Constructed in 1889 with Kingpost truss construction, it is a small bridge measuring 40 feet long and 12 feet 10 inches wide. Its importance rests in part on how few such structures survived in the state: by 1981, only 17 covered bridges remained in West Virginia. Its listing that year on the National Register of Historic Places recognized both its architectural character and its role in the state’s transportation history.
