David J. Jones was born in Cambria, WI, on June 20, 1880, and grew up there playing baseball with local players including the Dodge brothers, Willard and Ben. Known as an aggressive leadoff hitter with great quickness, Davy began a major league career that lasted from 1901 to 1915. He made his major league debut on Sept. 15, 1901, with the Milwaukee Brewers of the newly formed American League, and also played for the St. Louis Browns, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, and Pittsburgh Rebels. The Detroit Tigers outfield of Davy Jones, Ty Cobb, and Sam Crawford became one of the greatest trios in baseball history, and Jones was elected to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1964.
