On November 11, 1965, the wood-frame home of legendary blind fiddle player Elvis Black of McNairy County burned in a fast-moving fire at this site. Gilbert Keen died in the fire, and Black survived for 12 days before dying from his injuries. Outside on Leapwood Road, Sheriff Buford Pusser arrived to direct traffic, noticed a car weighted down in the back, and stopped it. As he tried to get the keys from the ignition, the car kept gaining speed and dragged him about 300 yards before he fell onto the pavement. The driver then lost control a short distance away, the car went into a ditch, and the two people inside escaped on foot. Authorities found 31 gallons of moonshine whiskey in the trunk, and Pusser suffered broken ribs in the incident. Elvis Black was posthumously inducted into the McNairy County Music Hall of Fame Class of 2014.
