Built in 1909 about 28 miles south of Torrington on land now near the center of Hawk Spring Irrigation Reservoir, this original homestead shack was a 12 feet 7 inches by 12 feet 6 inches square house that was home to the Trout family for 13 years, where they raised their 3 children. The floor was originally packed dirt covered with a rug or two, with the oldest 2 children sleeping on the floor while Mama, Papa, and the baby slept in the 3/4 bed. The shack was as hot in summer as it was cold in winter, and mice, snakes, dust, and dirt from plowed ground and Wyoming's ever present winds covered everything in grit. After the Trouts built a larger house, the shack was used as a milk house and a wooden floor was added.
