The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, beside Washington Dulles International Airport, opened in 2003 as the Smithsonian’s large National Air and Space Museum annex for aircraft, spacecraft, and rockets too large for the National Mall building. Made possible by a $65 million gift from Steven F. Udvar-Házy, it brought much of the national collection out of storage and into public view. Its two vast hangars display major artifacts including Space Shuttle Discovery, the Enola Gay, and the Boeing 367-80. Connected to Dulles by a private taxiway, it also serves as a working center for restoration, conservation, archives, and public programs.
