In Columbia, Pennsylvania, the National Watch and Clock Museum is a rare institution devoted entirely to horology, serving both the public and specialists. Founded in 1977 by the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, it has become one of the country’s broadest museums focused on timekeeping, especially after the Time Museum in Rockford closed in the 1990s. Its holdings include more than 12,000 clocks and watches, plus tools, machinery, and related materials, tracing timekeeping from sundials and hourglasses to atomic clocks and wristwatches. Notable strengths include American clocks and watches, watchmaking machinery, and the restored Engle Clock.
