Westerly Armory, on Railroad Avenue west of downtown Westerly, Rhode Island, was built in 1901 to replace an earlier destroyed armory. Designed by William R. Walker & Son, it belongs to a broader era of civic and military building in Rhode Island. Though created for National Guard use, its role expanded over time into a museum, community venue, and cultural center that preserves military and local memorabilia. It also houses the Westerly Band, described as the country’s oldest civic band, and the band’s historic library. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, it reflects the adaptation of old armories to enduring community life.
