The Soldiers and Sailors Monument honors the valor and patriotism of the soldiers and sailors of Lehigh County in the War of 1861-1865. It was dedicated on October 19, 1899, and restored and rededicated on May 30, 1964, to Lehigh County veterans of all wars of the United States. Its heroic bronze figures represent four branches of service typical of the 1861-1865 era: artillery, infantry, cavalry, and marine. Facing east, the principal bronze group expresses reconciliation and a reunited country through the figures of a Union soldier and a Confederate soldier beneath the emblem of a reunited nation, with the inscription "One flag, one country." The other three sides depict a cavalry charge, a vessel attacking a fort, and a reproduction of P. Philippoteaux's painting "The Rise of the North," showing troops arriving at Washington as President Lincoln reviews them in the temple of fame. Four bronze medallions portray the prominent Pennsylvania Civil War generals Hancock, Hartranft, Meade, and McClellan. At the top stands the Goddess of Liberty, holding a torch of enlightenment in her left hand and the national emblem in her right, while an American eagle rises above the flagstaff. The base is 29 feet high, the column 49 feet, the Goddess 21 feet, for a total height of 99 feet.
