Staff Sergeant Marcario Garcia of the U.S. Army's B Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, was born on January 20, 1920, in Villa de Castano, Mexico, entered service at Sugarland, Texas, and during action near Grosshau, Germany, on November 27, 1944, while serving as an acting squad leader, single-handedly assaulted two enemy machine-gun emplacements on a wooded hill that could be approached only through meager cover. His company was pinned down by intense machine-gun fire and subjected to concentrated artillery and mortar fire, but though painfully wounded he refused evacuation and crawled forward alone to a position near one enemy emplacement, hurled grenades, destroyed the gun, and killed three enemy soldiers with his rifle as they tried to escape. After rejoining his company, he attacked a second machine gun that had opened fire, stormed the position despite disregarding his own safety, destroyed the gun, killed three more Germans, captured four prisoners, and continued fighting with his unit until the objective was taken before allowing himself to be removed for medical care. His conspicuous heroism, inspiring courage, and complete disregard for personal safety wiped out two enemy emplacements and enabled his company to advance.
