Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is an 84-acre U.S. national cemetery and one of only two in the state, containing more than 68,000 interments. Established in 1870 on land donated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe, it was created after the Civil War to bury Union soldiers who died in New Mexico, especially those from the Battle of Glorieta Pass. Over time, it also became the resting place for remains moved from abandoned forts and battlefields. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, the cemetery features several war memorials and the graves of nine Medal of Honor recipients, as well as notable individuals such as novelist Tony Hillerman and Forrest Fenn, and it is expected to reach capacity before 2030.
