Service members from Hernando County who gave their lives in the Global War on Terrorism during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom were U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Lea Robert Mills, who died on 4/28/2006; Army Specialist Cody Clark Grater, who died on 7/29/2007; Army Staff Sergeant Michael Wayne Schafer, who died on 7/25/2005; Army Specialist Justin Dean Coleman, who died on 7/24/2009; and Army Specialist Clarence Williams III, who died on 7/8/2012.
