Lost Forest Research Natural Area is a protected high-desert tract in northern Lake County, Oregon, preserving an ancient, isolated ponderosa pine forest far from any continuous woodland. Its survival in an arid landscape depends on sandy soils, volcanic material, and a hard caliche layer that holds moisture near the surface, allowing the trees to persist on unusually little precipitation. The area includes old-growth pine, western juniper, shifting dunes, basalt outcrops, and a mix of desert and woodland plants and animals. After periods of settlement, grazing, military use, and timber cutting, formal protection began in 1972, and the area became an important site for scientific study and careful management.
