During the night of August 29, 1813, Red Stick Creek warriors scouted around the fort and noticed that the gun ports in the log wall had been placed low. During the August 30 attack, Red Stick Creek warriors took control of these gun ports from outside the stockade and fired guns and arrows at the civilians and soldiers inside. Captain William Jack of the Mississippi Territory Volunteers and the surviving members of his company regrouped along the south wall and held off some Red Stick Creek warriors who had been firing from the corner blockhouse. The attackers at Fort Mims were members of the Red Stick faction, known for the painted wooden war clubs they carried, and on August 29, 1813, they were led by Creek leader William Weatherford, also known as Lamochatee.
