The Golden Gate Bridge carries U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 between San Francisco and Marin County across the narrow, hazardous strait where the bay meets the Pacific. Long dependent on ferries, the region pursued a fixed crossing despite strong currents, deep water, wind, and fog. The project took shape through the work of Joseph Strauss, Leon Moisseiff, Charles Alton Ellis, and Irving Morrow, whose engineering and Art Deco design gave the bridge its distinctive form and International Orange color. Built from 1933 to 1937, it opened as the world’s longest and tallest suspension bridge and remains a major transportation link and symbol of San Francisco.
