For thousands of years, many generations of Washoe people spent summers near the shores of Lake Tahoe, known to them as da ow a ga, where a sacred meeting place and summer gatherings were a focus of Washoe life. The Washoe often returned to the same campsites year after year, using familiar fishing and hunting grounds. The lake provided an abundance of fish, especially suckers and cutthroat trout, and as the fishing season slowed, the Washoe hunted and gathered seeds, nuts, and other foods. The Washoe people continue to enjoy Lake Tahoe.
