Sussex County, with an area of 515 square miles, was formed in 1753 from Surry and was named for an English county; Cornwallis passed through it in 1781. Dinwiddie County, with an area of 521 square miles, was formed in 1752 from Prince George and was named for Robert Dinwiddie, Governor of Virginia from 1751 to 1756; General Winfield Scott was born there, and the Battle of Five Forks took place there in 1865.
