Fort Chiswell was built by Colonel William Byrd for his expedition against the Cherokees and served as a military outpost of Southwest Virginia from 1758 to 1776, the county seat of old Montgomery County from 1776 to 1790, and a strategic point in the defense of the lead mines during the Revolution. These millstones were used in the old Fort Chiswell Mill.
