Within a model of the solar system near Pluto, the vast scale of space is imagined by shrinking the Sun to grapefruit size less than half a mile away and placing Pluto beyond Neptune, while the nearest star, Proxima Century, would be grape-sized and 2,500 miles away, about the distance from New York City to San Francisco. The Sun and the stars visible in the night sky belong to the Milky Way galaxy, an immense swirl of stars and one of billions of galaxies in the universe, with perhaps 50 stars for every person on Earth and most stars possibly having their own solar systems. Light, the fastest thing known, can travel nearly eight times around Earth in a second, yet even at that speed the distance from the Sun to the next nearest star would be like crossing the continental U.S. as an ant moving 1 inch per second. Just outside Pluto's orbit, in February 1990, Voyager 1 took the first photographs of the solar system from beyond the planets, creating a family portrait that included Earth, and the solar system completes one orbit around the center of the Milky Way every 230 million years, so that one orbit ago dinosaurs roamed Earth.
