George Patton and his family came to Lake City in 1856 as territorial pioneers, purchased an interest in the new townsite, chose the square comprising this park for their future home, built their residence there that same year, and kept the entire square as their homestead during their lifetime. From 1857 to 1881, George Patton and his son Hiram T. Patton operated a pioneer store under the firm name of George Patton and Son. After the square was acquired by the city, the Lake City Improvement Club sponsored landscaping the park, with J.M. Underwood and E.A. Smith of the Jewell Nurseries credited for landscaping and planting and C.A. Koch for planning and supervisory service.
